What Are We Reflecting?

“As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the true man” (Proverbs 27:19).

Welcome back dear student.

Many great love songs have been written. The best songs tell a story. The tragic tales would bring a tear from a stone. A story needs a storyteller and an honest perspective.

Many great songs are wistful ‘what if’s?’ Such a small statement - asking a big question and relating to every part of life.

What if things had turned out differently?

What if this hadn’t happened?

There are many uncertainties in life, and countless possible outcomes. ‘Hindsight is the best sight’ they say. It’s easy to look back and join the dots after something has happened, rather than in the heat of the moment.

Reflection is a godly characteristic to pursue and work on.

As followers of Jesus, we must ask ourselves daily – ‘am I reflecting the Lord Jesus, or acting out of flesh?’

What Does Reflection Mean?

In physics, ‘Reflection’ is defined as: ‘light or sound rays that bounce off a surface at an angle equal to the angle at which they hit it’.

God is the ultimate Mathematician.

It’s interesting that a reflection is made up of light or sound – God is Light and, He speaks!

The Lord Jesus is the Light of the World, God dwells in unapproachable Light, His Word brings Light to every situation – overcoming and expelling darkness (John 8:12; Psalm 119:130; 1st John 1:5; 1st Timothy 6:16; John 1:5).

God’s voice thunders through waters, it leads His people onto right paths, and every created thing gives off a frequency sound - whether people,

animals, rocks, or the planets and stars to name but a few (Psalm 29:3-4; Luke 19:40; Psalm 19:1; John 10:27).

And the Word of God tells us that only we people are made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27).

We have the same ability to release creative Life and Blessings from our mouths, or curse and death – depending on who we’re following.

A reflection is the image we see or an echo we hear – demonstrating, or representing a person, place, or thing.

Reflection is also a form of self-examination: or a looking carefully at a

matter. It is a deliberate and honest pause; paying attention to the details, to learn and grow.

What Are We Reflecting?

Reflecting involves both looking back and looking forward.

Those we engage with may influence us, in that we reflect what we behold – i.e. in a fearful situation we can consume it and reflect dread or negativity.

In a crisis we can reflect chaos and mayhem. In dealing withan angry or bitter person some could end up reflecting frustration, offence, or even violence.

However, in God’s Presence, we can reflect His Peace, abiding in tranquil trust – even in tough times.

The Word of God Transforms Us

The Word of God transforms us. The Holy Spirit in the Word gently deals with us where we have been affected by sin, pain, trauma, or hurt, and He heals us (2nd Corinthians 3:17-18).

It’s a process - not a magic wand! Ultimately, it’s a lifestyle change - getting to

know the Lord Jesus, the Word of God, our Healer - the Prince of Peace, and then following His teaching and obeying His commands.

His commands are not burdensome - in fact, they protect us (1 st John 5:2).

True freedom is possible friend. We were all born free as babies, full of innocence and joy - but were defiled by sin and pain that separated us from God.

Jesus paid for our forgiveness, redemption, and freedom with His Blood because God loves us so much.

“Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces are not ashamed” (Psalm 34:5).
